Thomas Cassell

Graveside services honoring the life of Thomas Joe Cassell, 78, were held April 6 at Union Springs Cemetery in Converse with the Rev. Chucky Clark officiating. Joe was born on June 8, 1937 in Converse, to Randolph and Edna Pritchard Cassell, and died on April 4, 2016 in Shreveport. Preceding Thomas in death are his parents, Randolph and Marie Cassell. Those left behind to cherish his memory are his son, Randy Cassell and wife, Christie of Shreveport; sister, Deborah Cassell West and husband, Danny of Greenville, Mississippi and brother, Derrell Randolph Cassell and wife, Mary Virginia, of Converse. Sherry Lewis

Funeral Services for Sherry Ann Litton Lewis were held April 11, at Wallace Baptist Church with interment at Oak Grove Cemetery in Converse. Officiating the funeral were Dr. Jeff Jinks and Brother Dean Johnson. Pallbearers were Kenneth Barnes, Billy Joe Blankenship, Chris Friday, Brad Hines, Tommy Raimond, Henry Touchton, Arthur Touchton, and Rodney Walker. Sherry was born December 6, 1959, to Thomas and Mallie Litton of Pleasant Hill. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Wanda Slay. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 37 years, Stephen Lewis; children, Shelly Lewis-Rivers and husband, Jarrad, Mary Lewis James and husband, Micah, and Brooke Lewis; grandsons, Aidan Freeman, Grayson James, and Eli James; siblings, Thomas Litton, Jr., Charles Ray Litton and wife, Diane, and Lillie Bullard and husband, James along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.

Walter McMahen

Funeral services honoring the life of Walter McMahen, 86, were held April 11 at Rose-Neath in Many with the Rev. Ken Price officiating. Burial followed at Zwolle City Cemetery in Zwolle. Walter was born on October 21, 1929 in Magnolia, Arkansas to Walter and Ida May McMahen. He passed away on April 7, 2016 with his only child, Rance, by his side. Proceeding him in death were his wife, Opal A. McMahen; parents, Walter and Ida May McMahen and sisters, Willene Phillips, Flay Bearden, and Jean Murdock. He is survived by his son, Rance McMahen, of Zwolle; grandchildren, Carrie Summerton and Ryan McMahen, of California and Frank McMahen of Orange, Texas; great granddaughters, Rowen and Sophie Summerton, and Abigail McMahen of California. Jack Drew, Jr.

Funeral services for Jack S. Drew, Jr., 80, of Many, were held April 7 at Siloam Baptist Church with the Rev. Wilton Anthony officiating. Burial followed in the Siloam Cemetery. Jack S. Drew, Jr. was born on Sunday, August 25, 1935 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at his residence in Many. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther JoAnn Drew; parents, Jack and Pauline Drew and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his sons, Jack S. Drew, III and wife, Amy of St. Cloud, Florida and William J. Drew and wife, Aprail of Florien; daughter, Victoria Drew of Many; grandchildren, Ashlynn Cauthen, Abbygail Drew, William Gillespie, Elizabeth Thames, Tia Drew and Chance Drew; great grandchild, Ashleigh Thames and a host of friends. Loy Free Sr.

Funeral services honoring the life of Loy M. “Pappy” Free, Sr., 87, were held April 1 at Spring Ridge Baptist Church in Pleasant Hill with the Reverends Marshall Ingle, Hoye Leach, Danny Forsythe and Logan Brock officiating. Burial followed at Spring Ridge Cemetery. Pappy was born June 12, 1928 in Pleasant Hill to Frank and Lurline Blankenship Free and passed away March 27, 2016 in Shreveport. He proudly served his country in the United States ARMY. Preceding Pappy in death were his parents; sisters, Sadie Gates and Anice Free; brothers, Bill, Alton, James, Tim, and Franklin Free and a great grandson Landon Parks. Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Etoyce Free; son, Loy “Buddy” Free Jr. and wife, Connie; daughters, Debora Langston and husband, Tommy, and Jackie Parks and husband, Kenny; through birth or marriage 13 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Mary Remedies

Funeral Services for Mary Elizabeth Remedies, 69, of Zwolle were held March 29 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. Earl Provenza and Father Tim Hurd officiating. Burial followed in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Mary Elizabeth Remedies was born on Wednesday, November 6, 1946 in Converse. She passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at her home in Zwolle after a long battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Mary “Maggie” Rivers and brother, Philip Paul Rivers. She is survived by her husband, Benny Remedies of Zwolle; son, Dale Remedies and wife, Juanita, of Zwolle; brothers, Wilbert Rivers of Zwolle, Wilford Rivers and Gayla of Zwolle, Frankie Rivers and Melanie of Shreveport, and Charles Lopez and wife, Dora, of Zwolle; grandchildren, Tara Cartinez and husband, Jay, of Zwolle, Dana Sepulvado and husband, Lance, of Noble, Colton Remedies of Zwolle, A.J.

Lilianne Hays

Lilianne Faith Monique Hays, 16, of Ford High School in Quintan went to be with the Lord on December 14, 2015. She was born on September 25, 1999 in Dallas, Texas to Ernest and Brandy Hays. Lilianne was extremely devoted to her Lord and Savior, and the Quest church. She could light up a room with her smile. She was always so happy and bubbly. Lilianna was in acapella choir at her school and she loved cosmetology and fashion design. Lilianna is survived by her parents, Ernest and Brandy Hays; brothers, Jonathan Hays and Billy Dodson; sister, Savannah Hays; nephew, Bentley Dodson; grandmother, Shirley Evans and many aunts, uncles, and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Louise and Alvin Meshell. Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at the Quest Church in Royse City, Texas. Pastor Jim Dunn presided.

Joe Kirk

Funeral services for Joe Irvin Kirk, 75, of Florien were held March 26 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with the Rev. Jonathon Bost officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Joe Irvin Kirk was born on Friday, October 11, 1940 in Sands Springs, Oklahoma. He passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeff Davis Kirk and Laverna Belle Kirk; son, Jonathan David Kirk; sisters, Jean Morrison and Evelyn Sue Kirk; brother, Jerry Kirk, Billy Ray Kirk and brother-in-law, Norman Terrell. Joe graduated from Westlake High School, McNeese State University, and Navel Office Candidate School in New Port, Rhode Island. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture from McNeese State University. Joe was also the company Vice President at U.S. F & G Co. He enjoyed flying, scuba diving, hunting, softball, baseball, and umpiring high school softball and baseball games.

Becky McLendon

Funeral services for Becky Byles McLendon, 48, of Many were held on March 22 at Calvary Baptist Church with Bro. Cyle Clayton officiating. Burial followed in the Ft Jessup Cemetery. Rebecca Byles McLendon passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2016. Becky was born to Johnny Byles and Brenda Self Nash on March 12, 1968. On November 10, 1990, Becky married Keith McLendon who still survives. Also surviving Becky is her mother, Brenda Self Nash and stepfather, Freddie Nash of Belmont; brothers, Mike Byles and wife, Cindy, of Many, Eddie Byles and wife, Lisa, of Florien and sister, DaJuana Simpson and husband, Joey, of Belmont. Becky has several nephews and nieces and great nieces along with many other family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her father, Johnny Byles; paternal grandparents, Louis and Dorothy Byles and maternal grandparents, William Henry Self Sr. and Ora Lee Stephens Self.
